What We Believe

What We Believe

What Are Our Christian Beliefs?

Our statement of faith, in italics below, appears in the original wording given by the founders of our church. The style is historic, but the convictions are living and remain at the heart of who we are today. In plain text we’ve included a more modern interpretation.

We believe:

1.  The divine inspiration of the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, and their absolute sufficiency as the only authorised guide in matters of religion.
The Bible is the inspired word of God. It is the only true authority and guide in matters of faith. Therefore, it is unique amongst all religious writings.

2.  The existence of three equal persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

3.  The depraved and lost state of mankind.

Humankind is sinful by nature and as such is not able to find its way back to God.

4.  The atoning efficacy and vicarious nature of the death of Christ.

Jesus died in our place and took the punishment for our sin, clearing the way for us to return to God.

5.  Free justification by His imputed righteousness; the necessity and efficacy of the work by the Holy Spirit in conversion and sanctification.

The Holy Spirit of God works in us, to convert us from our wrong ways and to make us fit for meeting God in his fullness. God has made us right with Himself. Because God freely justifies us in Christ we no longer have to justify ourselves. God is able to make us holy in all our ways, something that would be impossible for us to achieve on our own.

6.  The final preservation of the saints.

God is able to keep us from falling away from Him and to present us perfect on the last day.

7.  The duty of all men to whom the gospel is made known, to believe and receive it.

We are all individually responsible for our reaction to the good news of Jesus.

8.  The spirituality of the Kingdom of Christ and His supreme authority as sole head of the church.

We believe Jesus should be king of individual lives and the life of the church.

9.  The resurrection of the dead, both just and unjust.

10. The general judgement. After death, everyone will be judged by Jesus Christ.

11. The eternal happiness of the righteous, and the eternal punishment of those that shall die impenitent.

Yhose who have repented and accepted the grace of God are right with God and will know eternal joy. Those who refuse to repent face eternal punishment.

Baptism

As a Baptist Church, we believe in Believer’s Baptism, which is the distinctive belief of all Baptist churches. However our unity with other Christians is also expressed through our membership of Churches Together, The Evangelical Alliance and Baptists Together

Governance

We believe, that God’s leading is expressed through its members. Therefore, we expect God to guide us when we meet together for Member’s Meetings.
